VITICULTURE
For this wine, organically grown Merlot was sourced from our Biogrow certified Mere Road vineyard on the Gimblett Gravels. The clone is Entav 181 and it was planted in 2003. The Mere Road vineyard is on a silty phase within the Gravels, with 30cm of silt over gravel. This soil profile is very well suited to Merlot. The free draining gravels allowed the fruit to hang through early season rain reaching maturity to be hand harvested on
the fifth of April 2023.

WINEMAKING
Hand-harvested Merlot was loaded directly into our press for gentle whole-bunch pressing. Only the first 500l/T of juice collected was used for this wine. This technique limits the amount of contact between the skin and the juice. The result is a very pale and low phenolic juice with a low pH and fresh acidity. The juice was fermented in French oak barriques and aged on lees for 10 months. 25% of the barrels were new, only four barrels were produced. After maturation, the wine was filtered and bottled without fining. This wine contains no animal products.

TASTING NOTES
JEWELSTONE ROSE 2023
Light, fresh raspberry and strawberry notes. Toasty oak and spice notes complement these red berry aromas. The wine presents like a fine Chardonnay but shows red berry flavours rather than ripe peach and citrus aromas as in a Chardonnay. It's a great food match with chicken or fish. Distinctive and unique.

Cellar potential

Unlike most Rose’s, this wine was made in a style that
will reward cellaring. It has the potential to age for 5 to
10 years from the vintage date and will develop more
complexity over time.

REGION

REGION REGION

Hawke’s Bay

Located on the east coast of the North Island, Hawke's Bay wine region is one of the warmest winegrowing regions in New Zealand. The long and warm growing season provides for excellent ripening conditions and full flavour development.

New Zealand Winegrowing

Central to the success of New Zealand as a world-renowned wine growing region is the temperate maritime climate and the free-draining alluvial soils.

The growing season is long, providing perfect conditions for slow ripening and full flavour development. Cool nights and warm days retain fruit acidity which lends a freshness and vibrancy, highly characteristic of New Zealand wine styles.

Soils

Gravel beds, free-draining alluvial soils and stony terraces.

Growing season

Warm and dry delivering intense and characterful wines.
