Restaurant with a Mission

Mission Estate Winery, New Zealand's oldest winemaker, was established in 1951 by the French Marist religious order. Although the seminary closed when the Marist Brothers moved to Auckland 14 years ago, the winery continues to produce quality wines and the seminary building has been restored and transformed into a showpiece restaurant.

Host Ewart Jartiz and Chef Steve Beere offer outdoor and indoor dinning with views across vineyards to the city of Napier, superb seasonal produce and award winning wines. The lunch menu includes some great dishes, such as fresh mussels stuffed with roasted garlic and pesto, braised rabbit pie with spinach and sage and ostrich fillet with black pudding.

Dinner may commence with entrées of black tiger prawns accompanied by a cos and avocado salad or calamari with ham and scallop farce, then progress to mains of duck breast and duck leg confit tortellini, char-grilled beef tenderloin served with red onion tarte tatin and roast garlic risotto, or venison striploin served on roasted pear and potato puree.

The dessert list may include Amaretto creme brulee, mission tiramisu or a warm apple and feijoa fine pastry tart with vanilla verjuice and vanilla bean ice cream. Properly ripened cheeses are also served.

mission restaurant, 198 Church Road, Taradale, phone +64 845 9354, is open every day from 10.30am until late.
