Mission Red NZ's best buy

One of New Zealand's most acclaimed and influential wine writers has given one of the country's smaller wineries a boost by naming its syrah the best wine buy for 2009.

Michael Cooper's Buyer's Guide to New Zealand Wines 2009 is set for release and this edition sees Mission Estate's Hawke's Bay Reserve Syrah 2007 dubbed the best red wine and best buy for next year.

Mission Estate winemaker Paul Mooney said it was the first time the winery had been given the "unique little accolade" and it was a real achievement.

Usually the award went to bigger companies with a large range of highly consistent wine, he said, and being a smaller winery with a limited product range made the recognition sweeter.

"There's quite a good profile round it really. He's really respected and seen as being very, very fair," Mr Mooney said.

"A lot of people buy that book. It's a little bible by which they buy wine. To get recognised with one of your wines says it is really good and at a good price point."

He had chatted to Mr Cooper about the award and the quality of the wine, which sells for $24 in supermarkets. Cooper said it was as good as many in the $40 range.

All the fruit for the wine was grown at two Gimblett Gravels vineyards and was of top quality thanks to the long, dry and settled autumn last year.

"We had lovely fruit to work with."

The best white wines were Main Divide Waipara Valley Riesling 2007 and Mount Riley Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2008.
