Use of Animals

We use sheep in a number of our vineyards to perform tasks such as mowing and leaf plucking.

Mowing is when sheep are introduced to eat grass and weeds in the vineyard at certain times of the year. This is usually from May through to the end of August. This reduces weed spraying and mowing requirements with tractors thus reducing our impact on our land.

Our leaf pluckers are used on our vineyards on some grape varieties where we want to remove leaves from around the bunches. It has been found that when sheep are introduced to the vineyard when the grape berries have set, they will eat the leaf around the bunch while leaving the bunch untouched. This effectively removes the leaves away from the bunches allowing light onto the bunches which reduced humidity and subsequent diseases, while ingesting the leaf and fertilising the vineyard!
