Caine's comments
Bruce and Diana are Mission Estate's longest serving growers. Their vineyard is located further up Ohiti Road, so is cooler again than the other growers further down the valley. The soil consists of silt loam with patches of shingle, making the flavour profiles similar but slightly different to the other sites on Ohiti Road.
Due to the slightly cooler nights this site is ideally suited to all white varieties, and fruit from this block makes up a significant proportion of the Vineyard Selection range. The Ellingham's are organically focused - running three organic apple orchards, and an organic fruit and vegetable shop. Their vineyard has been growing organically for the last three years and will be BioGro-certified in 2010.
The wines produced from this block have intense flavours and a fresh firm acid balance.
The Ellinghams run these three businesses, so Vineyard Manager Bevan has been put in charge to oversee the organic vineyard operation. Doing a fine job too!
