Mission Huchet
Exceptional wine made in honour of New Zealand's pioneering winemaker

Technical Note - Syrah

The fruit for this wine was handpicked from meticulously targeted zones in our Mere Road vineyard within the Gimblett Gravels. The vines were thinned to a bunch a shoot with the shoulders removed.

Fruit was hand harvested on 3rd April 2013 at 22.6 Brix and each bunch was carefully inspected and overripe or imperfect berries were removed.
The bunches were gently crushed with 50% of the fruit being whole berries. The fermentation was completed after 8 days with a daily regime of gentle hand plunging once a day. Post ferment maceration was 14 days without plunging. Malolactic fermentation took place in tank and there was no acidification, deacidification or added tannins.

The wine was matured for 19 months in French Barriques (33% new) with no racking.

A gentle fining was carried out prior to bottling using fresh free range egg whites

Technical Note - Chardonnay

The outstanding 2013 vintage in Hawke's Bay provided ideal conditions for Chardonnay and prompted the decision to craft the inaugural release of this special wine.

Fruit was hand harvested from low yielding vines and displayed exceptional intensity and flavour development. The whole bunches were then lightly pressed to achieve minimal extraction from the skins.

The juice was barrel fermented by indigenous yeasts in French oak (33% new) for 9 months and then transferred with the lees to older seasoned barriques to emphasise the bold fruit of the wine.

Barrel ageing on the yeast lees for a total time of 16 months has given optimum oak integration and richness. A selection of new, one and two year old barrels was selected to achieve the balance and intensity. 100% of the wine went through malolactic fermentation.

Cellar Potential: 5-10 years
Total Production: 1650 Bottles

Alcohol: 14.0%
Total Acid: 6.1 g/L
pH: 3.38
