Review
It's a kind of magic
by Roger Moroney
The kind of magic only Hawke's Bay and the geographical uniqueness of Mission Estate can conjure up.
A natural amphitheatre, which is unrivalled anywhere in the country, leaves even the most travelled and world wise artist gasping accolades.
The Mission Estate Concert is magic because it is many things to so many people. It has an initial slightly formal picnic feel to it, but as the excitement builds it becomes a more casual outing ... perfect for laughter, meeting up with friends, good wine and song of course. It is a party with lots of guests and the very best of entertainment.
A musical diversity, as illustrated by a look at the acts over the years since Kiri Te Kanawa took the main stage for the inaugural concert in 1993. Dionne Warwick, Ray Charles, Kenny Rodgers, Shirley Bassey, Julio Iglesias, The Beach Boys, The Doobie Brothers, The Hollies and Lulu, Engelbert Humperdinck, Sir Cliff Richard, John Farnham, B52s, and Rod Stewart. Each memorable in their own way.
The Mission Estate concerts have set standards for diversity, colour and exuberance. This is a unique event which has captured not only Hawke's Bay hearts but also the hearts of the country. People come from all points of the compass and the sentiments are the same.
"There's nothing like the Mission Concert."
